Abstract

The isothermal section (500 °C) of the phase diagram of the Al-Ho-Si (40 at.% Ho or less) ternary system was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, differential thermal microanalysis, optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis techniques. Four new ternary compounds were found: the M phase (HoAl 2Si), the N phase (Ho 5Al 14Si), the K phase (Ho 35-Al 30Si 35) and the T phase (Ho 37.5Al 32.5Si 30). The N phase belongs to the rhombohedral system with a = 7.834 A ̊ and a = 45.96°. The K phase belongs to the tetragonal system with a = 12.123 A ̊ and c = 15.138 A ̊ . The T phase is also tetragonal with a = 7.900 A ̊ and c = 4.255 A ̊ . The M phase has not been indexed. The isothermal section consists of ten single-phase regions, 18 two-phase regions and nine three-phase regions. The solubility of silicon in aluminium is 0.58 at.% at 500 °C.
