Abstract

Absolute energy distribution curves of low energy secondary electrons from a sputter-cleaned aluminium sample were measured under bombardment of H +, He +, and Ar + ions at 500 keV impact energy. Structures in the spectra at 5.6 eV and 11.0–11.4 eV may be explained by plasmon decay excitation if it is assumed that plasmons are excited not only by the primary ions but also by energetic internal electrons.
