Abstract

Through a systematic review of relevant Ming-Qing historical materials, Portuguese archives, and translations of notebooks, this study investigates the basic appearance of the early form of Western sports in Macau in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Taking the exchange and integration of Chinese and Western body culture as a starting point, this paper also attempts to provide reference for the construction of sports culture in Macau from the perspective of protecting its cultural diversity. It concludes that Macau’s cultural process of integrating the fashions of foreign cultures into local traditions, and finally forming its cultural pattern is a typical example of China’s early exposure to Western sports culture, and should be considered a classic reference case in current cultural exchanges between China and the West.
