Abstract

Over the past decade intrauterine device (IUD) use by women in the United States has increased suggesting an improving comfort level by physicians and patients in choosing this method of long-acting reversible contraception. A better understanding of the reasons behind early discontinuation the development of new therapeutic uses and a better appreciated of the low risk of adverse outcomes associated with the IUD has spurred interest in this option for contraceptive and therapeutic intervention. In this article investigations addressing all three issues regarding the modern use of the levonorgestrel-releasing IUD system are discussed.
