Abstract

Summary CMV infections represent an important risk of morbidity and mortality for patients whose cellular immunity is deficient such as premature infants, transplant recipients and a few exceptional patients with malignancies. Cell proliferation and differentiation as well as corticosteroid treatment seem to enhance propagation of CMV, which is immunosuppressive itself. Patients at greatest risk of CMV disease should receive most attention in order to prevent CMV infection. Since transplanted organs and blood are frequent sources of CMV, CMV-seronegative donors should be used for CMV-seronegative recipients.
