Abstract

Purpose: Meniscus extrusion and meniscus volume are both independently associated with incidence of knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, the interplay between these measures remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the causal relationship between meniscus volume and meniscus extrusion during knee OA development. By using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), we evaluated not only the direct effects of meniscus volume and extrusion on radiographic knee OA development, but also the indirect effect via changes in meniscus volume and extrusion, and via the incidence of meniscus tears over time.
