Abstract

The reaction between OsO 4 and either gaseous or liquid ammonia has been shown to involved reduction to Os 6+ in a single osmium-containing product, Os 3N 7O 9H 21; the other products are nitrogen and water. Numerous properties of the osmium (VI) compound are described and a trinuclear structure that involves bridging through amido groups is suggested.
