This study explores the intellectual legacy of ‘Abd al-Wahhāb ‘Azzām (1894–1959), a distinguished Egyptian scholar, writer, poet, translator, and political figure. Positioned within the broader framework of contemporary Islamic thought, the research critically examines his literary and academic output in light of the cultural and intellectual context of his era. Azzām's prolific contributions in the fields of literature, poetry, Islamic studies, and translation—particularly his role in introducing Persian literature to the Arabic-speaking world—reflect his deep engagement with cross-cultural scholarship. Among his notable works are Introduction to the Arabic Shāhnāmah and In Memory of Abū al-Ṭayyib al-Mutanabbī, which highlight his literary acumen and dedication to the preservation and reinterpretation of classical texts. The study further discusses his involvement in Egyptian political discourse, where he advocated for national independence and Arab unity. Through analytical and historical methods, this research assesses the enduring impact of Azzām’s work on modern Islamic intellectual trends and situates him as a key figure bridging traditional Islamic scholarship with modern literary and political currents.

The Social Sciences section of The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences aims to publish the highest quality social scientific research on aging and the life course in the U.S. and worldwide. The disciplinary scope is broad, encompassing scholarship from demography, economics, psychology, public health, and sociology. A key substantive focus is identifying the social, economic, and cultural contexts that shape aging experiences worldwide. In the coming decade, social gerontology research is poised to present many opportunities for cross-national and cross-cultural scholarship – driven in part by the proliferation of large parallel data sets from many nations in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. I will discuss the role that peer-reviewed cross-national scholarship can play in disseminating knowledge that informs gerontological research, policy, and practice internationally. I will also identify under-researched areas that will be of great interest to scholars in the coming decade, including LGBT older adults, aging in the Global South, reconfigured families, and centenarians.

Some contemporary Muslim women have subjected themselves to degradation and subordination due to mixture of cultural patterns with civilization where women are majorly focusing on career development at the expense of their marital responsibilities. However, a number of Ilorin Muslim women have succeeded in keeping a meaningful career as well as discharging their marital responsibilities dutifully. The paper reveal that some notable career Muslim women in Ilorin emirate such as Alhaja Segilola Alaya and Professor Ni’mat Abdur-Raheem have made huge contributions to the society in general and that the contributions of Alhajja meimunat Idi-Agbede are focus more centered on Shamsudeen College of Arabic and Islamic Studies, assistance of the orphans, widows and the needy among others. Therefore, the paper conclude that despite the huge number of contemporary Muslim women who have ventured into having career in men populated domain, a number of them still work-hard to sustain their various homes, by maintaining balance between the two duties. It is therefore recommended that the contributions of these notable career Muslim women be documented and exposed to serve as motivation for other women in Ilorin emirate.

Harmonising empathy: A critical exploration of Empathy Pathways: A View from Music Therapy by Andeline dos Santos
  • Nov 22, 2024
  • South African Journal of Arts Therapies
  • Sinethemba Makanya

"Harmonizing Empathy - A Critical Exploration of Empathy Pathways: A View from Music Therapy" reviews this important book by music therapist and scholar, Andeline dos Santos. The book delves into empathy as a foundational concept in therapeutic practice, especially within music therapy. Dos Santos critiques conventional, individualistic models of empathy, proposing a pluralistic and contextual framework instead. She introduces four pathways—Insightful, Translational, Empathizing Assemblage, and Relational Empathy—each rooted in distinct philosophical traditions. These pathways are intended to guide therapists in understanding and fostering empathy across different contexts. Dos Santos draws on interdisciplinary fields such as philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and indigenous knowledge systems. The book, thus, offers a nuanced view of empathy as an emotional and cognitive process embedded in cultural and social contexts. Dos Santos emphasizes the significance of cultural humility and pluriversality. However, her engagement with decolonial perspectives remains underdeveloped. Empathy Pathways provides rich theoretical contributions. However, the text’s reliance on Euro-American frameworks and limited citation of African scholars is a disappointment. Despite its intellectual depth, the book presents challenges in accessibility and practical applicability, especially for readers without a background in philosophy. Its exploration of relational empathy and practical music therapy strategies, including musical mirroring and improvisation, holds relevance for practitioners, urging them toward reflexivity and cultural responsiveness in therapeutic settings. Overall, Empathy Pathways offers a significant contribution to the field of music therapy and empathy studies. It pushes the boundaries of empathy research toward greater critical engagement with cultural contexts and relational dynamics. Its potential could be enhanced by deeper engagement with decolonial thought and more attention to global perspectives, particularly from the Global South.

IntroductionThis paper is a report on the state of research in two areas of Islamicstudies: Islam and economics and Islam and governance. I researched andwrote it as part of my internship at the Ford Foundation during the summerof 1992. On Discourse. The study of Islam in the United States has moved far beyondthe traditional historical and philological methods. This is perhapsbest explained by the development of analytically rigorous social sciencemethods that have contributed to a better balance between the humanisticconcerns of the more traditional approaches and efforts at systematizingthe study of Islam and classifying it across boundaries of communities, religions, even epochs. This is said to have s t a d with the developmentof irenic attitudes towards Islam, which changed the direction of westemorientalist writings from indifference (at best) and often open hostility toand contempt of Islamic values (however they were understood) to phenomenologicalworks by scholars who saw the study of Islam as somethingto be taken seriously and for its own sake, which is best exemplifiedby Clifford Geertz's Islam Observed. The work of Edward Said contested this evolution, and the publicationof his Orientalism has been described as "a stick of dynamite"' that, despite its impact in mobilizing a reevaluation of the field, was unwarrantedin its pessimism. In any case, the field has continued to evolve, with the most powerful force moving it being the subject itself. Thephenomenological/orientalist approach, if we can point to one today, ...

This study aims to conduct a critical analysis of symbolism in modernist literature, with specific reference to the works of T.S. Eliot and Roland Barthes. The objectives of the study are to identify the key symbols employed by these authors, explore their significance within the context of modernist literature, and examine the underlying themes and messages conveyed through these symbols. The methodology of the study involves a comprehensive literature review of relevant scholarly articles, books, and primary sources related to modernist literature, symbolism, and the selected authors' works. The analysis will be conducted through close reading and textual analysis of specific poems and writings by T.S. Eliot and Roland Barthes, focusing on their symbolic elements and their connections to broader social, cultural, and philosophical contexts. The problem statement of this study addresses the need to understand the deeper layers of meaning and significance in modernist literature, particularly with regards to the role of symbolism. By unraveling the layers of symbolism in the works of T.S. Eliot and Roland Barthes, this research aims to shed light on the complexities and nuances of modernist literature, and contribute to a deeper understanding of its artistic and intellectual foundations. The results and discussions of this study anticipate uncovering the intricate symbolic network embedded in the selected authors' works, revealing the multiple layers of meaning and the interplay between symbols and their socio-cultural context. Furthermore, the study aims to identify recurring themes and motifs across their writings, highlighting the distinct approaches to symbolism employed by each author. In conclusion, this study seeks to provide a critical analysis of symbolism in modernist literature, specifically examining the works of T.S. Eliot and Roland Barthes. By exploring the symbols, themes, and underlying messages in their writings, this research aims to contribute to a deeper appreciation and understanding of modernist literature as a significant literary and artistic movement. The findings of this study will not only enhance the scholarly discourse surrounding these authors but also offer valuable insights into the broader field of literary symbolism and its relevance in modernist literature.

A Study of Wyndham Lewis’s Hitler (1931) and The Hitler Cult (1939) in the Light of Literary Modernism and Politics
  • Nov 29, 2024
  • Journal of Critical Studies in Language and Literature
  • Mohsen Gholami

The present research delves into Wyndham Lewis’s political writings Hitler (1931) and The Hitler Cult (1939) through the critical viewpoint of Leon Surette to magnify modernism and its intersections with politics. Surette’s analytical approach stresses the ambivalent feelings and apparent contradictions in Lewis’s involvement with fascism, totalitarianism, and the broader political context of the interwar period (1918-1939). By examining these polemical and disputatious works through Surette’s lens, this research paper seeks to unravel how Lewis’s literary modernism wrestle with the political realities of his time, especially the peak and trough of Adolf Hitler and the allure of authoritarianism. In this fashion, Hitler (1931) portrays Lewis’s sophisticated mind and often contentious position, amalgamating modernist techniques with a problematic portrayal of Hitler as both a political figure and a modernist symbol. In contrast, The Hitler Cult (1939) manifests a marked change in Lewis’s perspective, moving from ambivalence to a more explicit conviction of the Nazi movement and the potential dangers of cult-like political extremism. In the end, this paper argues that Hitler and The Hitler Cult provide a nuanced and often contradictory exploration of the intersection between literary modernism and politics.

Historical studies are a vital discussion in various social sciences and humanities, including Islamic studies. Islam and Muslims are not static entities, but a continuous fact. In Islamic studies, a historical approach has actually been carried out, not only in relation to the chronology of Islamic development. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. The data were taken from historical science literature, then analyzed by theoretical hermeneutics which were then analyzed using the triangulation method, namely by conducting a cross check between theories in the historical method. The results of this research show that there are aspects of Islamic history that must be understood objectively so as not to lose the orientation of space and time, so that all doctrines, schools of thought and civilization in Islam can be presented objectively. Keywords:Â History;Â Methodology; Islamic Studies.

The Transformation of Islamic Studies: An Ethical and Methodological Analysis
  • Jan 1, 2024
  • IIUM Journal of Religion and Civilisational Studies
  • Mohd Mumtaz Ali

The field of Islamic Studies, like any other discipline, necessitates ongoing research and refinement. However, the nature of this research- whether theoretical, empirical, or a combination of both- remains a critical question. This inquiry prompts a reconsideration of Islamic Studies, prompting a re-evaluation of its scope and methodological foundations. Historically rooted in a limited perspective that framed Islam solely as a religious phenomenon, this paper contends that such a narrow conception fails to capture the comprehensive essence of Islam, as portrayed in the Qur’an. Islam, according to the Qur’an, is a holistic worldview encompassing a way of life, a source of values, morals, laws, and universal principles crucial for cultural and civilisational development. The argument presented herein posits that the scope of Islamic Studies must transcend the confines of traditional religious studies. Instead, it advocates for a paradigm shift towards a more comprehensive examination that includes issues related to worldview, way of life, culture, and civilisation. This paper asserts the imperative need for a transformative approach in Islamic Studies, advocating for a broader research program that addresses the multifaceted dimensions of Islam. Utilising a qualitative method of content analysis, this paper aims to explore and analyse the scope and objectives of Islamic Studies, identifying research problems that extend beyond conventional religious frameworks. Ultimately, the paper seeks to situate Islamic Studies within a broader cultural and civilisational context, emphasising its role in fostering human and social development.

Developing Technologically Enhanced Mathematics Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Initial Teacher Education
  • Nov 28, 2018
  • Floriano Viseu + 1 more

Nowadays perspectives on mathematics education argue for student-centred maths teaching that enables students to engage into learning activities and to play an active role in learning. Information and communication technological evolution provides teachers with an ever-increasing diversity of digital and smart tools that may successfully promote students’ deep engagement with the learning tasks. However, mathematics teachers need to learn how to integrate mathematics pedagogical content knowledge with technological knowledge so that they can develop technologically enhanced mathematics pedagogical content knowledge (TEMPCK). TEMPCK is required for teachers to select the best technological tool to teach a given content in the best way to a certain group of students in a specific social and cultural context. Initial mathematics teacher education has a key responsibility on this issue as it is expected to form updated teachers, able to effectively cope with the technological challenges of the moment as well as with the unanticipated challenges of future technology advancements. This chapter presents a few attempts of prospective mathematics teachers to use digital tools to teach different mathematics topics to secondary school students. Suggestions are made to increase the smartness of the learning environments used by the prospective teachers.
