This article investigates the integration of rationality and spirituality in the educational philosophy of Imam al-Ghazali, with particular attention to his experience of ta‘līm rabbānī (divine instruction) as a pathway to ma‘rifah (spiritual knowledge). Imam al-Ghazali’s intellectual crisis and subsequent spiritual transformation reflect a shift from reliance on discursive reason to a higher epistemic state grounded in divine guidance. Drawing on al-Munqidh min al-Ḍalāl and key insights from Iḥyā’‘Ulūm al-Dīn, this study analyzes the importance of spirituality or ma'rifah in education. This research employed a literature review grounded in a philosophical approach, wherein analysis was conducted by examining written texts. Methodologies utilized encompass critical review, comparison, summarization, and synthesis, adopting a descriptive-analytical approach to assess various dimensions of the proposed theory. The article argued that al-Ghazali’s ta‘līm rabbānī framework is not a rejection of reason, but a reorientation of reason under the authority of divine truth. The findings suggested that this integrated model provided a relevant paradigm for contemporary Islamic education, particularly in addressing the fragmentation of knowledge and the marginalization of spirituality in academic contexts. In contemporary Islamic education, this model challenges the prevalent separation of intellect and spirituality and calls for a reintegration of ethical, spiritual, and rational dimensions of knowledge in the formation of the human self.

This study aims to analyze the biography, intellectual thought, and Islamic educational paradigm of Ibn Rushd (Averroes) and to examine its relevance to contemporary Islamic education, which continues to struggle with normative-dogmatic tendencies and the limited development of critical rationality. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through content analysis of Ibn Rushd’s major works, including Tahāfut al-Tahāfut and Faṣl al-Maqāl, supported by secondary sources such as academic books and peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as interviews with Islamic education scholars and practitioners. The data were analyzed using interpretative and discourse analysis techniques, complemented by source triangulation to ensure validity. The findings reveal that Ibn Rushd positioned reason and revelation as complementary epistemological foundations in Islamic education. Intellectuality, in his perspective, encompasses rational, moral, and spiritual dimensions, aiming at the perfection of the human soul. Furthermore, Ibn Rushd’s educational paradigm emphasizes critical thinking, dialogical learning, and the integration of religious and empirical sciences, while rejecting rigid dogmatism. This study concludes that Ibn Rushd’s rational-integrative framework remains relevant as an alternative conceptual foundation for reforming contemporary Islamic education toward a balanced integration of faith, knowledge, and rationality.

Intuition According to Imam al-Ghazali and It’s Role as Methods of Acquiring Knowledge
  • Jul 1, 2024

This article is aimed at elaborating on the role of intuition as a valid methodology in acquiring knowledge according to Imam al-Ghazali's thought. The concept of knowledge according to Imam al-Ghazali culminates in the thought of the Sufis. That is to make intuitive knowledge a very important knowledge than other knowledge. This study uses descriptive and philosophical analysis methods by using the philosophy of science of Prof. Syed M Naquib al-Attas. From the study conducted, it is known that Imam al-Ghazali mentions several terms for intuitive knowledge: ilham, mukasyafah, hads, or wijdan. However, the term mukasyafah was discussed more by Imam al-Ghazali in his work. Ilham and hads are sometimes referred to the same meaning. Mukasyafah is mentioned more because it seems that in Imam al-Ghazali's view it is the highest spiritual knowledge. Intuition through mukasyafah is included in the ma'rifah category. Imam al-Ghazali distinguishes between al-ilm and al-ma'rifah. Al-Ilm is knowledge acquired through reason and sensory experience. While ma'rifah is knowledge obtained through the method of intuition that culminates in the introduction to Allah SWT. However, from the study it was also found that between al-ilm and al-ma'rifah did not differ dichotomously. However, Imam al-Ghazali's view shows that al-ma'rifah must be the basis of the development of al-ilm. The purpose of acquiring knowledge through al-ilm must culminate in the introduction of Allah SWT. The acquisition of al-ilm is called al-mi'raj al-awwal (the first ladder of acquiring knowledge). The acquisition of al-ma'rifah is called al-mi'raj ats-tsaniyah (second ladder of acquiring knowledge). In al-mi'raj ats-tasniyah, one gets an understanding of the nature of reality and the real truth. With this basis, spiritual knowledge is the basis of all knowledge. So, scientists should not stop at acquiring knowledge in the alamu ash- shahadah but they need to improve their findings in the alam al-Malakut. If so, then scientists who use intuition as the basis of their knowledge, see the existence of nature that must be based on tauhid, namely the tauhid of the muqarrabun. The highest level of tauhid. So that someone can gain knowledge of wisdom and recognize the nature of this natural reality, namely the Absolute Reality of Allah SWT. Subsequently, a scientist can gain knowledge of wisdom (hikmah). This wisdom moves to do justice to nature. This perspective with high spirituality awareness gives birth to a fair attitude towards nature and the environment. Nature is not seen as an inanimate object that stands free, but nature is a manifestation of Allah SWT. In that way, he recognizes adab to nature.

This study constructs a conceptual model of gifted and talented students grounded in the synthesis of classical Islamic thought, particularly the works of al-Ghazali and Ibn Khaldun. While Western paradigms typically define giftedness through metrics such as IQ, creativity, and academic achievement, they often neglect the spiritual, ethical, and social dimensions integral to Islamic education. To address this gap, this research proposes a holistic, value-based Islamic model for nurturing gifted learners. Employing a qualitative document analysis approach, the study thematically examines two primary texts: al-Ghazali’s Ihya’ Ulum al-Din and Ibn Khaldun’s al-Muqaddimah. Five core components emerge from the analysis: (1) the foundation of tawhid and moral ethics, (2) multidimensional intelligence encompassing spiritual, intellectual, and emotional capacities, (3) staged and developmentally appropriate learning, (4) balanced integration of worldly and spiritual knowledge, and (5) leadership oriented toward social contribution. The model is visually conceptualized as both a tiered pyramid and an integrative circle, reflecting the dynamic equilibrium between inner spiritual-intellectual growth and outward social-leadership development. By integrating al-Ghazali’s emphasis on adab and tazkiyah al-nafs with Ibn Khaldun’s insights on social cohesion, experiential learning, and pedagogical repetition, this framework offers a culturally rooted, comprehensive approach to gifted education. The study contributes to curriculum development, teacher training, and policy formulation in contemporary Islamic education, advocating for an educational paradigm that cultivates excellence in both character and competence. It further invites future research to operationalize and empirically validate this model within modern educational contexts.

In the midst of modernity, the understanding of Tauhid in Islamic education is often trapped in dogmatic memorisation without rational and spiritual depth, thus necessitating a more philosophical and reflective approach to the concept of divine oneness. This study aimed to analyse the concept of Tauhid through two main philosophical approaches, namely ontology and epistemology, as well as its implementation in Islamic education at MA Lukmanul Hakim. A qualitative method was employed through field research using observation, interviews, and content analysis to explore how Tauhid is understood as the reality of existence (ontology) and how knowledge of divine oneness is acquired and validated (epistemology). The findings show that, ontologically, Tauhid establishes Allah as wājib al-wujūd (absolute existence) who is entirely distinct from creation (laysa kamithlihi shay’un), whereas epistemologically the understanding of Tauhid is constructed through the integration of revelation (dalil naqli), reason (dalil ‘aqli), and spiritual experience (‘irfānī). The internalisation of Tauhid values in the educational process is carried out by harmonising science and religion, whereby science explains the mechanisms of the natural world (how), while Tauhid explains the intellectual agent behind them (who). The study concludes that a philosophical approach to Tauhid not only deepens students’ theoretical understanding but also provides intellectual immunity for the younger generation in facing the challenges of materialism and secularism in contemporary Islamic education.

This study aims to analyze the concept of Sufism-based Islamic education for adolescents from the perspective of KH. M. Qoyyim Ya’qub and its relevance to character development in the modern era. The study is motivated by the growing imbalance between physical (jasadiyah) and spiritual (ruhiyah) dimensions in contemporary Islamic education, which has contributed to various adolescent problems such as moral degradation, weak self-control, and spiritual crisis. This research employs a library research approach using a philosophical perspective and descriptive-analytical method. The data were collected from the works of KH. M. Qoyyim Ya’qub as primary sources, supported by scholarly literature on Islamic education, Sufism, character education, and adolescent developmental psychology. Data analysis was conducted through content analysis focusing on educational concepts, stages, methods, and value orientations of Sufism-based education. The findings reveal that KH. M. Qoyyim Ya’qub’s Sufism-based educational concept is structured systematically and gradually through four main stages: shari‘ah, tariqah, haqiqah, and ma‘rifah. This approach emphasizes the internalization of spiritual values, habituation of religious practices, the exemplary role of the spiritual guide (mursyid), and the integration of spiritual education with social life and practical skills. Sufism-based education is positioned not merely as a ritual practice but as a holistic pedagogical approach aimed at fostering moral awareness, emotional maturity, and spiritual resilience among adolescents. This study contributes theoretically to the development of an adaptive framework of Sufism-based Islamic education for modern adolescents and practically offers an alternative model of character education for Islamic educational institutions. However, this study is limited by the absence of empirical field data; therefore, future research employing qualitative field studies is recommended to further examine the effectiveness of this educational model.
