Abstract

In over eight years of teaching expert systems to accounting students, I have found that the first rule of expert systems integration is to avoid ambiguity in the terminology used. Unfortunately, possibly the greatest source of ambiguity in expert systems is the term itself. Expert systems have been variously defined according to function and/or structure (Brown and Phillips, 1995). In endeavouring to avoid this potentially disastrous confusion, I have come to define an expert system as:
