Abstract
The instability of a liquid jet immersed in a coflowing compressible airstream has been investigated on the basis of a linear, inviscid stability analysis, assuming uniform velocity profiles within the liquid and gas. Both two-dimensional and circular jets are investigated. Pronounced peaks in the temporal and spatial growth rates occur for values of the free-stream Mach number close to unity. A change from convective to absolute instability also occurs in this transonic flow regime of the gas.
