Abstract

The optical transport properties of the high- T c superconductor YBa 2Cu 3O 7− x are extracted from the infrared spectra at 300 K and 17 K while the absorption feature seen around 3500 cm −1 is attributed to the quasi two-dimensional character of the charge density profile of the carriers. The finer structures seen in the far and mid-infrared regions are related to surface absorption bands characteristic of BaCO 3, CuO and Y 2BaCuO 5 residues accumulating on the surface as a result of corrosion from the atmosphere water and carbon dioxide.
