Abstract

This study deals with the influence of orientation and space location on the rate of electric energy consumption for air-conditioning in residential buildings in Riyadh. The detached villas of King Saud University teaching staff at Addariya were selected as a case study. The villas constituting a complex of 461 units were classified into four groups according to their size, and into eight groups according to their orientation. Annual electric energy consumption for all the villas were accumulated, computed and analyzed. The correlation between the duration of insolation impinging on the glazed facades of the family living room and the male guest reception room, the pattern of daily space use of the two rooms and the annual electric energy consumption is investigated. The analysis of the data reflected the influence of the orientation of the family living room and the male guest sitting room on electric energy consumption of residential units of the case study.
