Abstract
Widespread flooding across the UK has become an annual problem within the UK. Consequently, trees are subject to prolonged periods of time (4–6 months) when their root systems are submerged under water. This review aims to highlight the detrimental impacts of prolonged flooding on tree biology, and discuss remedial measures and aftercare management procedures that can be used to ensure tree survival and longevity. Flood management strategies discussed include soil decompaction, drainage and aeration, the potential of soil amendments (biochar, mycorrhizal inoculants, novel peroxidase compounds, sugars, nitrogen fertilisation), application of plant protection products, mulching and plant growth regulators.
