Abstract

During the 2017 independence referendum in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, there was a clear campaign process that defined the issue at the time and formed a strong public opinion towards the referendum question, all led by party politics and internal rivalry. Generally, the campaign was grounded in nationalist rhetoric, and the arguments and statements made by the political actors were aimed at creating a unanimous decision to support Kurdish independence. This chapter explores the political party dynamics between the two main political parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), with a focus on how they influence public opinion, and to what extent their internal competition influences the region.
