Abstract

Although the importance of geological mineralogy has been emphasized for some time, it appears from the present texts that the descriptive approach is still being followed in the teaching of mineralogy. With stress on geological mineralogy a student would have more opportunity to tie together the great amount of material to which he is exposed in mineralogy. This background in geological mineralogy would more fully prepare the student for courses in petrology, economic geology, sedimentation, etc. With more emphasis on physical-chemical relationships and on mineral occurrence, there would be a better chance to develop a student's ability to think clearly and to stimulate the type of student we need in geology. More effort could be devoted to developing principles if less time were needed for discussion of our present complex terminology. This problem could be greatly simplified if a real effort were made to attain some uniformity in the usage of common geologic terms.
