Higher education is an effective means of transforming thought and movement to counteract the negative influence of various extreme and deviant religious schools and understandings, one of which is radical ideology, which has recently begun to emerge among students at several tertiary institutions. This study aims to obtain an overview of the steps that have been taken by UIN Raden Intan Lampung, UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, and UIN Sunan Gunung Jati Bandung in grounding the concept of religious moderation to anticipate and counteract the radicalism ideology that has recently infiltrated among University students. This research is classified as descriptive qualitative field research, using the maslahah (benefit) theory. Data were obtained from reviewing several documents in the three institutions, which were then processed and analyzed using the content analysis method. This study concludes that although each University has a different approach in its efforts to prevent and overcome radical religious ideology, the concept offered is the same, namely religious moderation, which is based on the principle of welfare, namely “li jalbi al-mashālih wa li daf'i al-mafāsid” (taking benefit and eliminating harm).

Higher education plays an essential function and role in the development of Human Resources (HR), this is what makes Indonesians look forward to higher education institutions, especially Islamic colleges, to build skilled and self-sufficient generations. The State Islamic Universities in Lampung is divided into two different institutions, Raden Intan State Islamic University Lampung (UIN RIL) and Metro State Islamic Institute (IAIN Metro) Lampung. Education occupies a strategic position in economic development when high-quality human resources are viewed as the determining factor in successful development. Likewise, most economists agree that human resources are the most decisive factor in character and National development speeds and Economy. This research is a qualitative study, with an entire population of Bumdes in the Lampung province of 1,988 and the identification of samples to 95 BUMDes. The results of this study found that out of 475 BUMDes administrators, there were still a few who had a undergraduate education background (S1), and they are not from state Islamic religious universities, because the contribution of alumni from UIN Raden Intan Lampung and IAIN Jurai Siwo remain limited in the business or partners of the various provinces of Lampung province.

This research is motivated by two things. First, theoretical facts state that every religion carries a mission of peace and salvation for all (rahmatan lil alamin), upholds human dignity, balance, justice and humanity. Second, the development of science and technology has led to an increase in human ability to understand religious texts. This research aims to find out, analyze and describe strategies, supporting and inhibiting factors in fostering attitudes of religious moderation in Islamic Religious College students at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. Type of qualitative descriptive research. Data was collected using interview and documentation methods. Data analysis was carried out using data reduction techniques, data presentation and drawing conclusions. Test the validity of the data using source triangulation. Research findings show that there are three strategies for fostering religious moderation attitudes of UIN Raden Intan Lampung students. First, the outdoor-indoor activity strategy is implemented in the form of moderation camp activities and outreach to strengthen religious moderation. Second, the modeling strategy is carried out by selecting student figures who are active in student organizations and UKM and have exemplary potential. Third, a holistic education strategy, carried out by providing coaching material referring to PMA number 93 of 2022 and studied from various scientific perspectives and real experiences in society. Supporting factors include the support of the Indonesian Ministry of Religion, the high commitment of the leadership of UIN RIL. Inhibiting factors include resistance from some senior student organizations who want balanced representation of participation in activities for all internal campus organizations. This is not in line with the available budget capabilities. The number of UIN Raden Intan Lampung students is quite large, and the majority of them come from general secondary schools, causing the implementation of the religious moderation development program to take quite a long time. Likewise, students' different religious understanding backgrounds require varied methods, a balanced number of resource persons/instructors/coaches/mentors with adequate religious moderation competence.

Madrasah Diniyah and Ma'had Al-Jami'ah-Based Religious Moderation Policy in State Islamic University in Indonesia

  • JURNAL PENELITIAN
  • Ngainun Naim + 2 more

This article seeks to elaborate the ma’had al-jami’ah-based religious moderation policy at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. This issue is interesting because religious moderation is a government policy that must be implemented by government institutions, including Islamic religious universities. The problem is that there are no nationally formal technical-operational guidelines for implementation so each tertiary institution has an interpretation for making policies to strengthen religious moderation by their respective contexts and considerations. The current study used in this article is qualitative with data mining techniques through interviews, observation, and documentation. The data that has been obtained is then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldańa model which divides the stages of data analysis into data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion. This article argues that UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah made interesting policies for religious moderation in the form of madrasah diniyah and ma’had al-jami’ah learning policies. Madrasah diniyah and ma’had al-jami’ah are designed not only as an activity to provide religious knowledge to students but also as a strategy for internalizing religious moderation and prevention of radicalism ideology.

THE APPLICATION OF THE AL-MURSALAH MASLAHAH TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF RELIGIOUS MODERATION IN THE LIFE OF STUDENTS OF UIN SU; EFFORTS TO EARN RELIGIOUS MODERATION IN THE REGION OF NORTH SUMATRA
  • Apr 7, 2023
  • Russian Law Journal
  • Nispul Khoiri

This research is normative legal research and empirical law. What is meant by normative legal research is research on theory, philosophy, comparison of other structures. Normative research here is an analysis of legal theory (fikih proposal) or also called applied fiqh proposal through the methodology of Islamic law al-Maslahah Mursalah with the legal case of religious moderation. The theory of al-Maslahah Mursalah is a methodology providing a legal basis based on the achievement of beneficial values towards religious moderation. While empirical research is intended to explore empirical facts or see first hand legal practice in the field related to the grounding of religious moderation, in order to provide reinforcement for this type of research (normative - empirical) it is necessary to use a research approach using descriptive qualitative methods. The interest of this research is to answer two important issues, namely: The urgency of grounding religious moderation in the UINSU environment and the application of the construct of religious moderation to UINSU as an effort to ground down religious moderation in the North Sumatra region. The results of the study show: First , the upholding of religious moderation among the UINSU campus is seen as urgent. UINSU is the driving center for religious moderation in the North Sumatra region as a pluralist area of ethnicity, religion, race and others. In the midst of this diversity of differences, UINSU as an PTKI institution has become an arrow in grounding religious moderation. Students and alumni must become arrows of religious moderation to apply ways of thinking, to be moderate by embodying the essence of religious teachings (Islam) which protect human dignity and build the public good – based on the principles of fairness, balance and obedience to the constitution. Second , the design of the construction of religious moderation at UINSU in an effort to instill religious moderation in order to increase North Sumatra's dignity is an important aspect of both the perspective of UINSU and this region. The application of al-Maslahah Mursalah becomes an important basis in realizing the beneficial values of maintaining religion (hifz din) , reason (hifz aql) , self (hifz nafs) , property (hifz mal) and offspring (hiz nasab) . Grounding in religious moderation actually guarantees the realization of all the dharuri needs referred to, on the basis of considerations Grounding in religious moderation is strengthened through the construct of religious moderation. UINSU is seen as important in implementing al-Maslahah Mursalah, with the following reasons: (1). The construction of UINSU's religious moderation as a media for moderation in religion is a universal not individual need, not only for UINSU, the North Sumatra region as well as this country, answering common interests to maintain the integrity of society, region and country. The heartbeat of the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia is determined by a moderate way of thinking and behaving that is not extreme right and left in religious understanding, so that peace, security, conduciveness, tolerance and others are truly maintained and maintained in diversity. The implication is that it helps protect religion, mind, self, property and offspring universally (2). UINSU's construction of religious moderation as a media for moderation in religion, in its application, creates benefits that are definite, not vague. For example, through integrated programs (UINSU - Pemprovsu) which are carried out as part of the construct of religious moderation, it will provide a lot of understanding of the importance of religious moderation in this area, without exception for UINSU. The benchmark, especially for UINSU, is to create conditions that are safe, peaceful, respect for differences, strong commitment to nationalism and others. In other words, the resulting output is real and certain (3). The construct of religious moderation of UINSU as a medium of religious moderation in its concept and application, seen from the purpose of its formation and formulation, is to provide benefits for UINSU, the North Sumatra region as well as Indonesia. This means that the desire to achieve the goal of benefit is correlated with the goal of Islamic law enforcement, namely the creation of benefit specifically for dharuri needs ( Hifz din, hifz aql, hifz nafs, hifz mal and hifz nasab ) (4). UINSU's construction of religious moderation as a medium for religious moderation, where the substance of the goal is to provide universal benefit, there is definitely no argument against it. Providing a real manifestation that religious moderation is a dharuri need , a solution to glue the unity and integrity of the region and this country in the midst of a fairly pluralistic society.

Religious Moderation in Indonesian Muslims

Indonesia receives a high religious harmony index every year; however, intolerance and religious radicalism threaten this harmony. Moderate Islam (Islamic religious moderation) has become a national policy as a solution to prevent intolerance and radicalism. In this study, we aimed to determine the factors influencing religious moderation. We examined the variables of religiosity and demographics, which play essential roles in forming religious moderation. A total of 578 students at state Islamic universities in Indonesia participated in this research. We measured religiosity with the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS-5) by Huber and Huber. The CRS-5 consists of five dimensions: intellect, ideology, public practice, private practice, and religious experience, which we adapted to the Indonesian language. The Religious Moderation Scale consists of three dimensions: national commitment, rejecting violence, and accommodating culture. We collected data through questionnaires that we distributed online, and we analyzed the responses using multiple regression analysis. The results show that religiosity positively affected religious moderation, meaning that religious intellectuality, ideology, public practice, private practice, and religious experience supported a person in being moderately religious and might prevent intolerance and radicalism. Socioeconomic factors (sex and parents’ income) also strongly affected religious moderation.
