Abstract

Industrial ecology is an interesting opportunity to industry, but it is indeed also a challenge to universities, both in terms of research and in terms of curricula development. The concept of industrial ecology emerged in Japan in the 1960s, but the work by Erkman.S demonstrates that understanding of this concept has undergone a considerable change during recent years. Industrial ecology represents a considerable challenge to academia and the university as an institution. The programme has been given a mandate for a period of at least ten years and is to cover multidisciplinary teaching and research as well as the development of life-cycle analytical competence within the university. At Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) the process of applying systems engineering principles and a multidisciplinary strategy within its Industrial Ecology Programme has just begun. NTNU in general has a well-developed research platform in the areas of technology, natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities.
