Purpose: Game addiction has emerged as a significant mental health concern among adolescents. This study assessed the severity of gaming addiction among junior and senior high school students and examined its perceived effects on emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and social functioning, with the goal of informing prevention and intervention strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted involving 918 students aged 10 to 23 years. The Young Internet Addiction Test (IAT) was used to measure the severity of gaming addiction. For exploratory analysis, the 20 IAT items were categorized into four domains: emotional disturbances, learning impairments, sleep disturbances, and disruptions in daily activities. The chi-square test was employed to assess associations between addiction severity and demographic variables (gender, age group), as well as differences in the impact on each domain. Results: Male students exhibited significantly higher levels of gaming addiction than female students (P<0.001), and students aged 12 to 15 were more likely to experience severe addiction than those aged ≥16 years (P=0.030). Game addiction was associated with negative outcomes, particularly emotional disturbances, sleep problems, and disruptions in daily routines. Male students were significantly more affected. However, age-related differences across domains were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Gaming addiction in adolescents is influenced by gender and age and is linked to various emotional, cognitive, and behavioral difficulties. A coordinated response involving parents, schools, and communities is required. Evidence-based strategies—including digital literacy education, emotional resilience training, and accessible mental health support—should be integrated into school-based and community-level interventions to promote healthier digital habits.

The article is devoted to the problem of identifying the relationship between the subjective feeling of loneliness and the tendency to computer and gaming addiction in adolescence. Lonely people tend to be very unhappy, they have few social contacts, and their personal connections with other people are either limited or severed. In connection with the development of computer and gaming technologies, computer and gaming addiction is highly prevalent and tends to increase. Studying the relationship between the subjective feeling of loneliness and the tendency to computer gaming addiction in adolescence is a significant task in understanding the reasons for the formation of computer gaming addiction in adolescence and is associated with the possibility of timely correction of such deviations in the development and behavior of boys and girls. We assume that the subjective feeling of loneliness determines the development of computer and gaming addiction in adolescence. The article presents the results of a correlation analysis between the parameters of feelings of loneliness and computer game addiction: "severity of computer game addiction" and "general loneliness", "positive loneliness", "dependence of loneliness on communication". The results of the study allow us to conclude that an increase in indicators according to the criteria of "general loneliness" and "subjective feeling of loneliness" leads to an increase in the criterion of "severity of computer gaming addiction".

 • Masaru Tateno + 6 more

Adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have various psychiatric comorbidities, particularly depression. In recent years, gaming disorder (GD) and Internet addiction (IA) have been identified as common comorbidities of ASD. We administered three self-administered screening instruments to adolescents with ASD to assess the severity of depression, GD, and IA. The participants were 10-18-year-olds with ASD. They were asked to complete three questionnaires to assess depressive symptoms, GD, and IA: the Patient Health Questionnaire for Adolescents (PHQ-A), Ten-Item Internet Gaming Disorder Test (IGDT-10), and Internet Addiction Test (IAT). The total IGDT-10 score was calculated in two different ways: the original scoring version (IGDT-10-OV) and the modified version (IGDT-10-MV). Of the 74 respondents, 24.3% had moderate or severe depressive symptoms, 8.1% were identified as having possible GD according to the IGDT-10-OV, 39.2% were identified as having possible GD according to the IGDT-10-MV, and 27.0% were positive for IA according to the IAT. Two-group comparisons revealed that depressive symptoms were more strongly associated with IA than with GD. IA was associated with more depressive symptoms than GD. Since adolescents with ASD have difficulties with social communication, they are prone to isolation and feelings of loneliness. Longer screen times due to social isolation may be a risk factor for the development of GD/IA. Adolescents with ASD often exhibit a preference for visual processing but may struggle with verbal communication. Thus, they may find online spaces more comfortable for them to alleviate their feelings of loneliness.

 • Seog Ju Kim + 4 more

Background: Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT) is one of the most widely used scales for assessing Internet addiction. Aims: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the value of IAT for subjects clinically diagnosed with Internet addiction. Methods: A total of 52 subjects, whose chief complaint and most serious behavioral problem was Internet addiction, were enrolled at an Internet-addiction clinic associated with a university hospital. The IAT was administered to assess the existence and severity of Internet addiction. Subjects were classified according to the severity guidelines of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, text revision (DSM-IV-TR) and according to the duration of their Internet addiction. Results: The mean IAT score of our clinical subjects was 62.8 ± 18.2, which was below 70, the cut-off point indicating significant problems. The IAT detected only 42% of the clinical subjects as having significant problems with Internet addiction. No significant differences in IAT scores among those with mild, moderate and severe degrees of Internet addition were found, and no association between IAT scores and duration of illness was observed. Conclusions: IAT scores were not significant correlated with clinical severity and duration of illness in a clinical population. This instrument had limited clinical utility for evaluating the severity of Internet addiction. Considerable caution is required in interpretations of IAT scores.

Sensation Seeking and Online Gaming Addiction in Adolescents: A Moderated Mediation Model of Positive Affective Associations and Impulsivity
 • May 5, 2017
 • Frontiers in Psychology
 • Jianping Hu + 4 more

Based on the Dual Systems Model (Somerville et al., 2010; Steinberg, 2010a) and the biosocial-affect model (Romer and Hennessy, 2007) of adolescent sensation seeking and problem behaviors, the present study examined how (affective associations with online games as a mediator) and when (impulsivity as a moderator) did sensation seeking influence online gaming addiction in adolescence. A total of 375 Chinese male adolescents (mean age = 16.02 years, SD = 0.85) from southern China completed anonymous questionnaires regarding sensation seeking, positive affective associations with online games, impulsivity, and online gaming addiction. Our findings revealed that sensation seeking, positive affective associations with online games and impulsivity were each significantly and positively associated with online gaming addiction in adolescents. Positive affective associations mediated the relationship between sensation seeking and online gaming addiction. Further, impulsivity moderated the relationship between positive affective associations and online gaming addiction, such that the association between positive affective association and online gaming addiction was stronger for high than for low impulsivity adolescents. These findings underscore the importance of integrating the biosocial-affect model and the Dual Systems Model to understand how and when sensation seeking impacts adolescent online gaming addiction.
