Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the impact of Erbium (Er) ion on the crystallization of Yttrium Fluorosilicate glass ceramics. The structure and chemical properties of the samples were analyzed in order to study the type of nucleation. In samples with 0.1% and 0.2% molar Er Acetate, X-ray method did not show crystal phase peaks; however the same method showed that samples prepared with 0.4% of Er acetate had a ceramic structure containing α-quartz and δ-Y2Si2O7. TEM findings showed when samples were heated at 400 °C; nuclei under 5 nm could be observed which is related to YF3 crystals. Furthermore, the crystallization activation energy values were calculated through a modified version of Kissinger's method and for samples with 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4% the mole of Er Acetate were 231, 237 and 327 KJ/mole, respectively. Finally, the results revealed that the volume of nucleation increases when the molar percentage of Er is raised.
