Abstract

Abstract An electronic Raman transition ( 3 E g ← 3 A g ) has been observed between the trigonally split components of the 3 T 1g (F) ground term of the hexa-aquavanadium(III) ion in CsV(SO 4 ) 2 ·12H 2 O and NH 4 V(SO 4 ) 2 ·12H 2 O. The magnitude of the splitting (1940 cm −1 ) is in agreement with that estimated from earlier magnetic measurements (≈ 2000 cm −1 ). The appearance of structure on the electronic Raman band can be interpreted in terms of transitions between spin-orbit coupled states.
