Abstract
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Edwards had much to say about the office and function of the Holy Spirit throughout his writings. In particular, the Holy Spirit was not merely a spectator of the atonement, but rather “the thing purchased.” The Holy Spirit is the love of God poured out into the hearts of the saints, uniting them to the Father and Son—in other words, the direct and immediate presence of the Holy Spirit within the believer is God's grace. This theology of grace is best understood as a synthesis between Lombard's “uncreated grace” and Aquinas's “created grace.” In terms of regeneration, a “new principle of action” is imparted through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Charismatic gifts are “but dung and dross” when compared with the excellency of the Spirits indwelling and leading as a vital principle.
