Abstract

The HoGa system was re-examined on the gallium-rich side by differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, metallography and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive analysis. The existence of HoGa 6 was established. It has a primitive tetragonal structure, PuGa 6 type, with the following lattice parameters: a = 5. 918 A ̊ ; c = 7.543 A ̊ . Unlike the systems of cerium, neodymium and gadolinium with gallium, no solid solubility of gallium in HoGa 2 was found. The lack of solid solubility is explained in terms of relative distortion of the unit cell of HoGa 2 on replacing a holmium atom by gallium atoms. The lattice parameters of HoGa 2 and HoGa 3 were confirmed.
