Abstract

The histochemistry of the neurosecretions of the brain of Hirudo is examined. The secretions of all of the cell types studied ( α 1 , α 2 β 1 β 2 ) are found to be proteinaceous, with possible small carbohydrate and lipid moieties. The PF-positive secretions of both α cell subtypes are characterized by a high content of cystine and a low content of tryptophan or other 3-indolyl derivatives. The β 1 cells (orange G-staining) react weakly with all tests applied. The β 2 cells (which stain with fast green FCF) have a high content of tryptophan or other 3-indolyl derivatives and little or no cystine. The possible significance of the differing responses of the β cell subtypes to the histochemical tests is discussed.
