Abstract

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy has been associated with congenital diseases and the epidemiologic situation in Ecuador has been poorly studied. To identify the presence of CMV infection in pregnant women at risk for preterm delivery in comparison to matched controls from cervical cytology specimens testing CMV rRT-PCR. Given the well-documented sequelaes of CMV in pregnancy, specially during the first trimester, we tested for the identification of CMV in cervical cytology of pregnant women. We obtained that a high incidence of CMV infection in lower reproductive tract of the population of pregnant women was identified. A case-control study was carried out to determine the incidence of CMV infection among low-income, pregnant women at risk for preterm delivery in comparison to matched controls. Cervical cytology specimens were tested for CMV rRT-PCR. Fifty-nine pregnant women were included. The incidence of CMV was 37,28% (22/59) overall: 12/30 (40,00%) in cases and 10/29 (34,48%) in controls. We identified CMV in cervical samples that showed a high incidence of CMV infection (37%) in a distinguished populace in Guayaquil, Ecuador. We found that 7/30 (23.33%) had had at least one abortion as gynecological-obstetrics history in cases and 1/29 (3.44%) in controls.
