Abstract
I am going to talk about three approaches to deep inelastic lepton scattering: 1. The naive parton model1 2. The covariant parton model2 3. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) The covariant parton model is an attempt to formulate Feynman’s naive parton model in field theoretic terms. Nowadays, one or other of these versions of the parton model is regarded as the non-perturbative element in the scattering cross-section; this is then corrected by perturbation theory calculations based on QCD. That is, the parton model is the zeroth-order contribution to QCD. The naive and covariant forms of the parton model make the same predictions for νW2.
