Abstract

Joining existing databases of computer characteristics, we build a robust long run indicator for computational services. A regime change occurs between 1981 and 1985 with the advent of personal computing. Since then, the affordability of desktop computing has doubled every 13 months. Storage devices display a similar break and have seen their affordability doubling every 14 months for hard drives and every 11 months for USB drives. Focusing on portable computing services, we devise a service index that has doubled every 17 months. As a matter of comparison, US accounts for the computer sector predict a doubling every 4 years, showing a clear underestimation of computer progress. Lastly, the share of maintenance labor in the total user cost of computers has a U shape with near zero minimum around 1970 and is now back to 50%.
