The Growing Fear of an Aesthetic Evaluation
This paper explores the shift in Swiss practice-led image research toward quantifiable, reproducible results aligned with scientific standards, highlighting the growing reliance on aesthetic evaluation while contrasting it with aesthetic theory's emphasis on the contextual and situated nature of aesthetic judgment.
This paper examines the evolution of practice-led image research within Swiss visual communication design departments, observing a shift from basic research inquiries to concrete applications. Recent projects align with the prevailing notion that research is considered scientific if its results are quantifiable, reproducible, delegated to technical apparatus, and seemingly independent of individual aesthetic judgment. By providing an overview of the aesthetic discourse in Western philosophy relevant to practice-led image research, this paper establishes a foundation for understanding the potential and pit falls of aesthetic judgment as a methodological approach to exploring how images generate meaning. The value of aesthetic evaluation in practice-led image research is discussed and contrasted with the critical perspective of aesthetic theory, which highlights the situated nature of aesthetic evaluation.

The progress of science and technology and the rapid development of the Internet have made the visual communication design full of unprecedented yearning and passion for the new scientific and technological civilization. This research mainly discusses the visual communication design under 5G technology. For the fifth generation mobile communication technology (5G), its brand new network architecture design can provide 10 to 20 times higher peak rate, millisecond-level network transmission delay, and 100 billion device-level network connectivity than 4G. It will open up a new era of extensive interconnection of all things and deep human-computer interaction for human society. This paper starts with the relationship between visual communication and various media, so as to prove that the development of mobile media will be inevitable, especially in environment, the visual expression and the innovation in design style. In order to reflect the inner will of the audience in the environment of rapid development of information, this article. It analyzes the changes brought by the development of mobile media to the visual communication design at this stage, predicts the development trend of visual communication, and tries to point out that the development of 5G communication technology is bringing a new round of revolution to the design industry. As a design researcher, it should pay attention to the impact of technological changes on the design field. By exploring suitable design methods, the application of visual communication in mobile media under 5G technology conditions can be better realized. Starting from the background of the evolution and development of media, this paper analyzes the reasons for the rise of 5G technology, as well as the characteristics of 5G technology and its advantages in communication. At the same time, it deeply analyzes the connotation and involved fields of visual communication design and expounds the promotion and influence of the reform of media technology. It focuses on analyzing the development level of 5G technology and the new thinking brought by visual communication design. The article also puts forward the origin of the research. 58.1% of the evaluators were satisfied with the impact of 5G technology on visual communication. Visual design, interaction design, and usability design are all indispensable factors in interface design. When designing, they are not designed in isolation from each other but interact with each other. When carrying out any one of the designs, the design influence of the other two should be combined, and the changes of each one should affect the design of the other two. For example, interaction design and usability issues must be considered when determining the visual presentation of an interface. It can be seen that the design process of the interface is a comprehensive design process. This research helps to advance the development of visual communication design in the future.

This article develops some conceptual correlations between Kant’s theory of aesthetic judgment and the common law tradition of legal judgment. The article argues that legal judgment, like aesthetic judgment, is best conceived in terms of intersubjective validity rather than objective truth. Understanding the parallel between aesthetic and legal judgment allows us to appreciate better the relationship between subjectivity and intersubjectivity, the individual and the community, in the formulation and communication of judgments, which combine a personal response and a reasoned determination intended for a discrete audience. The article frames and pursues these themes in relation to four core concepts in Kant’s aesthetic theory: judgment, communication, community, and disinterestedness. Through sustained comparison and application of these concepts in aesthetic judgment and legal judgment, the article provides a conception of judging that more accurately captures the common law role and relationship of the individual judge and the institutional judiciary as integral parts of the broader legal and political community.

Visual communication design and space design is discussed in this paper the complementary relationship between, it is worth mentioning that the visual communication design can be a good blend of collision and space design, so the analysis of the blend mode in the design of visual communication design elements in space, and space visual design elements of law, more reasonable and effective use of visual communication design elements in space design activities for better design services, become a carrier capacity and environmental design in visual communication design concept, therefore, in the design of the two classify, between the two cannot be away from each other, can only promote better design complement each other. As is known to all, the most direct contact between human beings in this world is vision, also known as sight and sight, followed by hearing, smelling and tasting. Therefore, the more intuitive feelings of human beings will be conveyed by vision. In 1960, the term "visual communication" popular in the world design congress held in Japan, including printed newspapers and magazines, posters and other promotional material design, and television, movies, electronic billboards and other media, through the eyes to convey to the brain for modelling of expressive design is widely referred to as visual communication design, there's a phrase can express: show people design, design. Moreover, in the design of contemporary exhibition space, visual communication design elements are often used. These design elements not only have the function of transmitting information, but also have unlimited commercial value and propaganda effect. Left the concept of positioning, space design is only the so-called functional platter; Ignore the visual communication of visual language, no matter how good the environment will be due to graphic design style gap and left a failure. As we know, one of the most important functions of visual communication design elements is to help present the most complete visual effect in the spatial display. The organic connection between visual communication design and display space design not only harmonizes the relationship between two-dimensional plane and three-dimensional space environment, but also expands the cooperation between subjects and strengthens the research space between the two design disciplines. Only in this way can designers solve complex and comprehensive problems and help designers make full use of their advantages to create better works.

Today, the significance of vision is often considered from multiple points of view including perceptual, cognitive, imaginative, historical, technical, ethical, cultural, and critical perspectives. Visual Studies, Visual Communication and Visual Design are popular courses of study found in many programs of higher education. This paper centers on a course called Visual Training within the domain of architectural education. To illustrate the pedagogical significance of the 78-year old practice, a methodology of Visual Training as it has been conducted at Illinois Institute of Technology is presented. The paper describes the program of exercises used, and through an interpretation of the course outcomes, it reveals the course structure and pedagogical theory. The discussion shows how Visual Training establishes grounds for architectural critique based on visual perception and aesthetic judgment. In looking at this case of Visual Training, the paper revisits some of the fundamental premises of architectural pedagogy – from methods to ideals – and challenges assumptions about the role of vision in education by calling attention to existing biases shaping many of today's programs.

ABSTRACTWe challenge an argument that aims to support Aesthetic Realism by claiming, first, that sense is realist about aesthetic judgments because it considers that aesthetic judgments can be right or wrong, and, second, that because Aesthetic Realism comes from and accounts for aesthetics, it is the best aesthetic theory available. We empirically evaluate this argument by probing whether ordinary people with no training whatsoever in the subtle debates of aesthetic philosophy consider their aesthetic judgments as right or wrong. Having shown that the results do not support the main premise of the argument, we discuss the consequences for Aesthetic Realism and address possible objections to our study.1. Introduction1.1 The common sense argument a ground for Aesthetic Realism?Several arguments are used to support Aesthetic Realism. Among these, one consists in appealing to aesthetics, that is, to common-sense beliefs about aesthetic judgments, and more precisely to the fact that lay-persons are natural normativists.1Traditionally (at least since Kant), philosophers consider that aesthetic judgments possess at least the following features: aestheticism (i.e., aesthetic judgments ascribe aesthetic values to things, persons, and events) and (i.e., aesthetic judgments for universal validity in the sense that when one formulates an aesthetic judgment, she considers her judgment as being either correct or incorrect so that, in a contradictory aesthetic debate, each side believes that at most one of them is right). Philosophical theories according to which aesthetic judgments actually possess such correctness (or incorrectness) are normativist theories. Others, which hold that aesthetic judgments do not possess this feature, we call skeptic theories.2 The claim according to which aesthetic judgments possess normativity is thus equivalent to the claim that laypeople are normativist. As such, Aesthetic Realism is a normativist theory. Reference to and folk normativism in aesthetic judgments appears in an argument with two steps for Aesthetic Realism, which is summed up by Zangwill (2001).Both realism and non-realism are on a par as far as the experiential aspect of aesthetics is concerned. But when it comes to explaining the of aesthetic judgements, the realist is ahead [...] I conclude that folk aesthetics is thus realist. Whether or not the tacit folk metaphysical commitment to aesthetic facts or states of affair is justified is another matter, but our aesthetic judgments presuppose that metaphysics. What is not an option is holding some non-realist view, be it Humean, Kantian or dispositional, while we can unproblematically retain our ordinary practice of making aesthetic judgments. The first step states that laypeople are normativist when it comes to aesthetic judgments (or, to put it in different words, that is indeed a property of lay aesthetic judgments). Accordance with folk aesthetics is capital for Aesthetic Realism. Indeed, it is important for Aesthetic Realism not to conflict with ordinary judgments for two reasons. First, by doing so, it compels the concurrent theories (those which agree with Aesthetic Skepticism) to endorse the argumentative burden of proving that and explaining why laypeople are wrong. Second, it allows Realism to compensate for its metaphysical disadvantage. Indeed, Aesthetic Realism is more metaphysically demanding than Aesthetic Skepticism because the former appeals to aesthetic entities,3 whereas the latter does not. Thus, if it were shown that Aesthetic Realism conflicts with sense, then motivations for holding such a theory would be very thin because, in this case, Aesthetic Realism would be at the same time more metaphysically demanding and in need of an error theory. The purpose of the second step is to show that Aesthetic realism is the best theory available. …

The rise of the internet has not only changed lifestyles, values, and social structures for people, but also denotes the age of mass replication and transference of information. Since information is so easily and quickly obtained from the dazzling internet world, the presentation of information is like mirages. Therefore, website homepages play an instrumental role for the conveyance of information or visual senses. This study seeks to explore the visual images of “design college (group) homepage” in universities and colleges in Taiwan, including departments involving visual design, such as visual communication design, commercial design, and multimedia design. Webpage design is in the realm of visual communication design; this study seeks to explore how college images are expressed through website homepages. Summarization and analysis through content analysis are used to extract the visual elements of the homepage, and the formal principles of beauty are used to explain the correlation between visual elements and images. The content and suggestions from expert interviews are used to summarize elements of visual image through analysis to construct a basis for reference for future design and research of academic webpages. For the topic “design college (group) homepage,” literature review, visual analysis of layout, and expert interviews are used to discover that principles of visual communication design can conform to forms of beauty, and show the visual aesthetics of webpage layout. Expert interviews show the importance of design education in webpage design. Designers believe that elements of outstanding visual design works not only include layout arrangement, but the presentation of the content is also very important. They also believe that “design college (group) homepage” is not just for promotional purposes, but is actually the starting point of the design education of a college. Therefore, it is necessary to utilize professionalism in webpage design with visual aesthetics and design principles to achieve the effects of visual communication.

Enrollments in online courses continue to grow. With this growth has come an increased need for instructors to develop content for their courses using digital technology. To address instructors’ abilities to develop content for a virtual environment, institutions have focused on the most effective and efficient ways to design online courses and programs. However, despite increased focus on the instructional design of online courses, little attention has been given to their visual design. This is problematic because research suggests that the visual design of online courses can improve the student learning experience. Given this problem, additional research is needed to understand the visual design of online courses, including page layout design and the integration of visual media. Three different studies were conducted to address this problem (a.) Study 1 is a literature review that synthesizes the relevant topics in visual communication design to online course development. The study addressed the mechanics of visual design but also external factors that influence visual design thinking. In this chapter, the authors seek to clarify the process of using visual design to improve the online learning experience. The chapter concludes by suggesting strategies that colleges and universities can use to help faculty and instructional designers learn visual design skills through the creation of a design studio. (b.) Study 2 is an exploratory qualitative study that investigates the ways in which educators in higher education apply visual design to their online courses through the design process framework of looking, thinking, doing, and critiquing (LTD+C). Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore instructor’s use of a visual design process, application of visual design thinking, and perceived barriers in designing online classrooms. Based on the findings of the study, it is suggested that the visual design process in online courses can fit within the LTD+C framework and activities associated with each part of the process should be further explored. (c.) Study 3 is a qualitative content analysis of images used in online courses. The study examined the current use of images in higher-education online classrooms along with the ability of instructors to create, select, and apply images to an online classroom learning management system by exploring well-known frameworks of image taxonomy in online classrooms. Based on the findings of this study it is suggested that the current framework of educational image taxonomy can be elaborated upon and that instructors need better training in appropriately handling using images in online classrooms. The general conclusion promoted in this dissertation is that visual design needs more emphasis within the field of education from both practical applications and research-based studies.

With the continuous development of our country’s modernisation process and the continuous development of education, the education of design talents is getting more and more attention from people, the era of design as a “secondary subject” in schools has ended, modern people have recognised that the world of design is a world of infinite wonders, and that some design experience is an indispensable element for enriching people’s lives, and design is related to the deepest things in human nature. Design is closely related to the deepest part of human nature. As an important part of the design field, visual communication design is not only an education of design techniques as traditionally believed, but also a complex systematic project to develop wisdom. It is not possible to improve one’s design quality with only a little bit of technique. In addition to mastering design technique, we must also be familiar with the development history of design and its development prospect, have the ability to appreciate design and have insight into design, and fully explore one’s own visual thinking, so as to make one’s own design thinking more active. Visual thinking is a novel concept. This ability is inherent in us, and for designers of visual communication design, the cultivation of visual thinking should be richer and more diversified. But to engage in design through this ability requires special training.
