Abstract

Bioenergy can provide important contributions to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. Local acceptance is crucial to the adoption of bioenergy technologies, and opposition to these technologies can frequently block their implementation. This paper presents the history of two bioenergy projects and charts two different stakeholder responses—YIMBY (Yes, in my backyard) and NIMBY (Not in my backyard). The author uses these cases as positive and negative models of how communities might achieve fair and successful bioenergy solutions.
