Abstract

In its 2015 election platform, the Liberal Party committed to take several steps to reduce criminals’ access to handguns and “assault weapons.” In 2018, the government introduced Bill C-71 to carry out many of its election promises. Despite only making minor changes to Canadian law, the bill sparked considerable opposition from the firearms community and the Conservative Party. High profile domestic and international shootings placed pressure on the Trudeau government to implement even stronger gun controls. The Liberals, however, proved reluctant to undertake additional measures, choosing instead to include new commitments in its 2019 election platform.
