Abstract

Following a historical review of mathematical models in medicine, a critical analysis of the current state of the art is presented under themes of: contribution to scientific study, utility in education and utility in clinical decision making. Positive outcomes for the first two are encouraging. The last theme is more problematic. However, by considering the potential of mixed modelling approaches we outline possible future use of mathematical models in clinical decision making. A case study approach is adopted.
