Abstract
Two recent items in Physics Bulletin seemed to suggest a retreat from physics to technology, namely the letter from M J Williams in the September issue (p363) and the 'Opinion' by Richard Forbes in November (p448). Apart from the fact that the espousal of such a policy by an institute of physics would be an admission of defeat, it would not secure the future of technology.
