Abstract

This chapter characterizes the French immigrant community in Argentina, particularly in Buenos Aires. The community cooperated with the war effort by providing men for the battlefields. Based on the diplomatic records of those of who were mobilized and official French death tolls during the war, this chapter draws a quantitative and qualitative picture of those who marched into the battlefront. It also analyzes the economic war and the prohibition of commercial contacts with German companies or those suspected of being so, and their effects on the French community. In addition, it considers the cooperation between the embassies of the Allied countries in developing intelligence work to analyze and counteract German propaganda in the River Plate region. Finally, it reviews the different political nuances that were visible in the press of the community, despite the unanimous patriotic feeling of support for France.
