Abstract

The mechanical and electrical properties of the B-doped Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system were investigated. The flexural strength of the sample of nominal composition (Bi 0.3B 0.5Pb 0.2)Sr 1.0Ca 1.0Cu 2.2O y′ is more than twice the strength of (Bi 0.7Pb 0.3)Sr 1.0Ca 1.0Cu 1.8O y without the B. This could be due to the superconducting grain size. On the other hand, the critical temperature T c (off set) of the former is 105.5 K, which is approximately that of the latter (107 K). In this study, the high- T c phase exists in a Cu-rich condition compared with the so-called “2-2-2-3” composition, because it appears in the range of 2.2 ⩽ x ⩽ 2.7 in the material of nominal composition (Bi 0.3B 0.5Pb 0.2)Sr 1.0Ca 1.0Cu x O y′ .
