Abstract

In Tsarist Russia, close to four-fifths of the population were dependent on agriculture in 1913. Hence, the October Revolution occurred in a predominantly agricultural country. The early decrees of the Bolsheviks included, inter alia, those on the nationalization of land, the eight-hour working day, workers’ control, emancipation of women, universal free education, free medical care, and unemployment and other social security benefits.
