Abstract

For three years, until the end of the Reagan administration, the king did not visit Washington. Then in April 1989, Hussein met with President George H. W. Bush at the White House. After their meeting the president referred to Hussein as an old friend and noted that the relationship between Washington and Amman had substantial roots. The president emphasized that both countries were committed to negotiating a Middle East peace. President Bush also assured the king that Washington would provide Jordan with economic and military assistance.1
