Abstract

States the views of the Family Planning Association (FPA) regarding sex education and its inclusion in school curriculums and describes their training course for sex educators. While recognizing sex education as the primary responsibility of parents FPA believes it is the right of individuals to understand and learn about their own sexuality and to make responsible decisions based on that knowledge. Sex education is a resource for promotion of these rights and responsibilities especially among young people. Secondary and further education is seen as the most appropriate place for its institutional incorporation. The Education Unit of FPA is concerned with the development of appropriate skills in teachers of sex education through a course of its own design. The course objectives are to provide factual information about human sexuality and relationships to increase awareness of the needs of the people with whom the course members work to increase sensitivity and comfort with the subject matter and to demonstrate methods of education in sexuality and personal relationships. It places strong emphasis on group participation mainly through role playing exercises communication games and group discussions.
