Abstract

Objective To explore the expression of Livin, Apaf-1 and ARID1A protein in early stage squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of cervix, and to analyze their relationships with clinicopathological characteristics and patients' prognosis. Methods SP immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of Livin, Apaf-1 and ARID1A protein in 166 early stage SCC tissues and 50 normal cervical tissues. Results The positive rates of Livin and ARID1A in SCC tissues were respectively 46.9 % (78/166) and 64.6 % (107/166), which were obviously higher than those in normal cervical tissues [12 % (6/50) and 30.0 % (15/50), P < 0.05]. The positive rate of Apaf-1 in SCC tissues was 33.7 % (56/166), which was lower than that in normal cervical tissues [52.0 % (26/50), P < 0.05]. There were positive correlation between the expression of Livin and clinical FIGO stage, local lymph node metastasis and vascular infiltration (P < 0.05). The expression of Apaf-1 was negatively correlated with the expression of Livin and local lymph node metastasis (P < 0.05). The overall survival (OS) time of Livin negative cases was longer than that of Livin positive cases, and the OS of Apaf-1 positive cases was longer than the Apaf-1 negative cases, with significantly statistical difference (P < 0.05). Conclusions The expression levels of Livin, Apaf-1 and ARID1A protein have significant differences between the SCC tissues and normal cervical tissues. The positive expression of Livin shows poor prognosis, and Livin can be served as the independent prognostic indicator of early stage SCC.
