Abstract

Wireless systems and networks are proliferating at a rapid rate. The untethering of both personal and business communications is being propelled by technological advances in microelectronics, digital signal processing, and network software, as well as by the compelling desire of users to receive services anytime and anyplace. This growth situation is most evident with voice communications. More than 30 million Americans currently subscribe to and use cellular service. Projections are that by the start of the new millennium, more than 500 million people worldwide will subscribe to cellular and personal communications services (PCS) that will be primarily digital in nature.
