Abstract
The effect of crystal thickness and composition on the energies of the adsorption edge excitons in W 1−χTa χSe 2 (with small x) has been investigated. It is found that (a) for x = 0 the exciton absorption peaks move to higher energies with decreasing crystal thickness (b) in the thickness independent region the A 1 ( n = 1) exciton moves to higher energy and decreases in intensity with increasing x. This behaviour is discussed in terms of exciton confinement and free carrier screening of the electron-hole interaction.
