Abstract

By massive stars we mean stars with masses larger than 9 M⊙ at the beginning of core hydrogen burning. After the hydrogen and helium burning phase these stars start more advanced stages of quiet nuclear burning. Stars with masses below this limit, the ‘intermediate mass stars’, develop after the helium burning phase an electron degenerate CO-core, which evolves towards a supernova situation, by explosive carbon ignition.
