Abstract

To solve the severe housing shortage problem, many developing countries give much emphasis to the quantitative supply side of housing. This study shows that, building more housing units with given resources, reducing land acquisition, and construction costs by increasing building density, and decreasing building quality, creates a multitude of problems. Unfavourable physical and social conditions result, which in turn could affect the physical and psychological health of the inhabitants.
