Abstract

This article surveys the present status of the European spallation source (ESS). Starting with an account of the ESS feasibility study, the ESS project development until summer 2001 is briefly described. Particular emphasis is placed on the recent science-driven target station evaluation, leading to the choice of a long-pulse 16\(\frac\Box2\Box\Box3\Box\)-Hz station and a short-pulse 50-Hz station both operated at 5-MW beam power. Furthermore, technical aspects of the accelerator and the target stations and the ESS instrumentation are discussed, and a few examples of the anticipated scientific impact of the ESS are given.
