Abstract

The everyday lives of late Ming and early Qing Jiangnan literati had interesting esthetic characteristics. This article analyzes drinking culture to explore these artistic lifestyles. The consumption of alcohol was not merely a way to satisfy the taste buds or the stomach. Rather, it was a form of entertainment and cultural practice that showcased lifestyle and personality. In addition to analyzing the emotional lives of Jiangnan literati, this article will also explore the esthetic concept of “leisure” (閒xian) as leisure embodied the esthetics of Jiangnan literati life. Leisure was a daily life pursuit of many Jiangnan literati, as well as a measure of a person’s taste. The everyday lives of literati became more interesting and varied because they valued leisure.
