The Either/Or of the Cinematic Image: Deleuze, Kierkegaard and the Promise of Cinema
This article examines Deleuze’s work on cinema as an indirect response to views on the ontology of art expressed in Kierkegaard’s Either/Or. The pseudonyms of ‘A’ and ‘B’ claim that traditional art forms cannot capture movement and time in a manner adequate for expressing the aesthetic and ethical life-views they respectively represent. Through analysis of Kierkegaard’s text as well as of key scenes from Casablanca (1942) and A Hidden Life (2019) , I argue that the movement-image and time-image provide a compelling answer to these limitations and fulfil their hidden promise of an art form capable of such expression.

The study investigates the integration of visual cultural elements in emerging scripts and the motivations driving their development. With 293 scripts existing for approximately 7000 spoken languages, many Indigenous communities are creating their own scripts to preserve language and culture amidst declining linguistic diversity. By examining ten scripts, including Wancho, Chisoi, Mwangwego, and others, the research identifies four main types of visual cultural elements: common cultural icons and images, influences from traditional art forms, elements from indigenous knowledge systems, and traditional body art forms. The analysis reveals that integrating these elements enhances script acceptance within communities, fostering a stronger connection with users. Furthermore, the study explores five primary motivations for script development: resistance towards dominant groups, unification of marginalised groups, expression of cultural identity, language preservation, and recuperation of literacy. Findings suggest that while visual cultural elements significantly impact script acceptance, the motivations behind script development also provide valuable insights into historical and contemporary trends in global script innovation. The study highlights the importance of incorporating visual cultural elements in script design to ensure cultural continuity and language preservation.

The visual language of graphic novels is increasingly becoming a powerful tool of expression. Originally known as the comic books, the contemporary graphic novels are being acknowledged as a potential medium for handling serious issues. Recently, a great changeover in the thematic concerns and the art style of Indian Graphic Novels has been witnessed. This hybrid medium of text and image is addressing to the sensitive issues and questions of the contemporary modern society and also establishing a cultural identity through its artistic (visual) expression. The conventional style of comic sketching and caricaturing on paper is being replaced by the traditional art forms from different cultures and regions of India. This shift has brought about a change in the perspectives or the ways of ‘seeing’ both the Indian Graphic Novels and the Indian visual art forms. The paper purports to establish a connection between these two with a proposition that the graphic novels are a potential mode of preserving the traditional art forms of India and helping them gain recognition globally so that the Indian Graphic Novel can also create a distinguished identity in verbal-visual literature like that of Japanese Manga. The paper is an endeavour to examine how the traditional art forms are being contextualized in the contemporary times and how they are effectively registering the resistance against the stereotype and the negligence especially of women and Dalits in the Indian society itself.

The Dynamics of Graphics in Ibibio Traditional Art Akaninyene John Sampson, PhD Abstract From a modernist perspective, it may be difficult to ascribe graphics to any form of traditional African art. This could be due to the embrace of western values by Africans, and of modernity on the one hand, and the overwhelming negative influence of westernization on the diverse African cultural practices, on the other hand. However, many elements of the traditional art forms are imbued with icons and symbols which expressions may be viewed as graphical in nature. This paper looks into the dynamics of graphics in the art of the traditional Ibibio society of Nigeria and attempts to appraise form and content. It is aimed at investigating the various symbolic applications in Ibibio traditional art forms and to establish the degree of graphics inter face with these art forms. The paper expounds the term graphics, identifies, and relates it to, salient properties of graphics in the art products of the traditional Ibibio society. It also examines the manner in which societal norms and social institutions are fundamental to the art forms proportionate to the communicative indices. The methodology for this study includes in situ study, formalism, iconographic studies and library research. The paper concludes that graphics is a crucial index in the arts of the traditional Ibibio society of Nigeria and, indeed, Africa. Full Text: PDF DOI: 10.15640/ijaah.v6n2a2

Introduction. Among the processes that are clearly traced in the modern artistic practices of Mordovia, there is one that draws particular attention – the desire to comprehend folk art in a new way, to actualize the traditional layers of culture within the framework of neo-traditional forms of contemporary art. A folk dance is an example of one of the directions of modern choreography. The purpose of the article is to review the experience of creating choreographic suites in modern dance in Mordovia, based on traditional folklore. This allows studying the techniques of citing traditional forms of folk art in contemporary art and the ways of their actualization. Materials and Methods. As the main material for studying, this study analyzed the performances of choreographers of Mordovia, working with such modern dance as choreographic suites «Girl-birch» and «Eight Mordovian songs». It was possible to formulate answers to the research tasks as a result of the application of a systematic analysis of sources on this topic, as well as carrying out a comparative analysis of the compositional structures of these choreographic suites, the specific features of the construction of their choreographic texts and work with musical material. Results and Discussion. The actualization of traditional artistic practices in contemporary art is an experiment and constant search for new ways of expression. Within the framework of one of the neo-traditionalist trends in contemporary art, folk dance, one can observe the way how traditional values are rethought and considered as relevant now, thereby the past becomes part of the modern way of life. In this context, the analysis of the search for a new way of expression within the framework of the suite form is of particular interest. As a result of the analysis of the compositional forms of modern choreographic performances in Mordovia, it revealed two trends in the development of the form of a choreographic suite: a movement along the path of creating a production with non-classical content on the basis of the classical suite structure and an appeal to traditional compositional forms of folk art and filling them with relevant content. Conclusion. The neo-traditional trend in art is based on the idea that tradition is not only the past of the people, it also exists here and now, our actual present. With the advent of the folk direction in modern choreography, the search for such an actual true tradition has become a unique feature of modern dance in Mordovia. Within the framework of this article, some ways of the development of folk direction were noted, associated with experiments in relation to the form of a choreographic suite and the main trends in the search for the development of the dance form were outlined.

The knowledge system of ancient Chinese art history is a crucial heritage of Chinese culture, with its inheritance and innovation profoundly influencing the prosperity and development of Chinese culture. Over the course of history, ancient artists accumulated rich practical experience, forming distinctive artistic styles and expressive techniques. This valuable artistic heritage was transmitted through oral traditions, written records, and other means, providing valuable references and inspiration for later artistic creations. However, as times change and society develops, the knowledge system of ancient Chinese art history faces numerous challenges. Traditional art forms are gradually losing their value and status in modern society, and the younger generation’s awareness and interest in traditional art are diminishing, impacting and challenging traditional art forms. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the inheritance and innovation of the knowledge system of ancient Chinese art history. This involves not only the preservation and transmission of traditional art forms but also innovation and development based on tradition. By delving into the meaning and value of ancient art works, identifying their relevance to modern society, and infusing traditional art with new vitality and contemporary significance, contributions can be made to the inheritance and development of the knowledge system of ancient Chinese art history.

Studying indigenous textile artisans and their art forms can provide insights into a side of the global textile industry which is still relatively untouched by commercialization. This paper presents an ethnographic study conducted on the lived experiences of indigenous women textile artisans in the North Eastern Region of India (NERI). The results of an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) uncovered a profound connection that the artisans shared with their traditional textile art forms, such as silk rearing, spinning, dyeing and weaving. Furthermore, recent government support, artisans’ personal intention to revive the traditional art form, and ingenuity employed in every step of the production process, drove the sustenance of the artisans’ livelihood and their art form. An interpretive explanation of how the connection between, and the sustenance of, the artisan and their art coexisted is provided. The significance of these artisans’ sustainable approach to their livelihood and textile art is discussed.

Henan Dadiao Quzi is classified as Quyi, a folk art form between song and traditional opera, emphasizing music and narrative more strongly than dramatic performance. This study investigates the role of Henan Dadiao Quzi in enhancing Quyi Opera literacy in contemporary Chinese education. Incorporating this traditional art form into school curricula can promote cultural, musical, and ethical literacy among students. Conducted in Nanyang, Henan Province, the study involved two key informants with over 20 years of experience in Henan Dadiao Quzi and one general informant, experienced in teaching and performing the art form. Data collection methods included semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, with thematic analysis used to identify key themes. The findings reveal that Henan Dadiao Quzi significantly enhances students’ understanding of cultural narratives, musical structures, and ethical values, thus promoting a deeper engagement with Chinese heritage. However, the study also identifies challenges in integrating traditional opera into modern educational frameworks, particularly in adapting the art form to contemporary teaching methods. Suggestions for future research include comparative analyses of other traditional art forms and the development of curriculum models that better incorporate traditional arts into contemporary education.

Due to an increase in pop culture consumption and social media use, traditional art forms such as classical music, pottery, and painting are not covered enough in modern journalism. Today traditional art forms, such as classical music, sculpture, and painting, are still seen in a very linear way, even though there are opportunities for this medium to be represented in media. Art journalism would not only help music to be utilized in various ways but also enhance society by exposing more people to art. Art journalists act as an amplifier for many artists by giving them a platform to promote their work and also allowing them to draw connections with each other. Additionally, art journalism promotes cultural appreciation because it often covers cultural events, music, and artwork with artistic aspects. Furthermore, providing these artists with an outlet to popularize their work allows people to discover certain cultures that they might not have otherwise. In all, given that classical forms of art are declining in popularity and the younger generation is becoming increasingly less exposed to traditional art, art journalism can be an effective way to maintain traditions and ensure that art forms such as classical music do not die out completely. The purpose of this research is to study how a decline in art journalism and journalism overall will impact our society and today’s youth, as well as study the statistical trends of artistic journalism. The research design will consist of quantitative research on the exact statistics of arts journalism and qualitative research concerning the effects of these factors and will be used to present the argument that art journalism is necessary for our society. The findings from quotes, graphs, and charts will be analyzed to do so, and summarized in the conclusion.

Song Ci art songs, originating during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE), represent a harmonious blend of classical Chinese poetry and traditional music, embodying profound cultural, historical, and artistic significance. This study investigates the educational significance of Song Ci art songs, focusing on their role in fostering literacy within traditional Chinese art forms. Literacy, in this context, extends beyond reading and writing to encompass cultural interpretation, critical thinking, and artistic appreciation. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, this research was conducted at a cultural education institution in Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, renowned for its active engagement with Song Ci art songs. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four key informants, document analysis, and thematic observation of workshops and performances. The findings reveal that Song Ci art songs enhance cultural literacy by engaging learners with the historical, linguistic, and emotional dimensions of Chinese heritage. These songs also promote interdisciplinary learning by integrating poetry, music, and visual arts, while fostering linguistic proficiency, analytical thinking, and artistic creativity. Despite challenges in accessibility due to their complexity, the study highlights the potential of multimedia tools and interactive learning strategies to address these barriers. The research underscores the significance of Song Ci art songs as a medium for preserving cultural heritage and enriching education, offering insights for integrating traditional art forms into modern curricula. Future research should explore cross-cultural applications and technological innovations to further enhance their educational impact.
