Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of small doses of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) anterior chamber injection in anterior uveitis concomitant cataract surgery. Methods Forty-two eyes of 35 patients with anterior uveitis concomitant cataract were performed phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. All patients were randomly divided into two groups: TA group, 21 eyes received anterior chamber injections of TA 2mg/0.05ml before the operation finished; control group, 21 eyes received anterior chamber injection of equivalent perfusate. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure, anterior chamber reaction and corneal endothelial cell density in two groups were observed and compared at different time points after operation. Results The anterior chamber reaction at 1, 3 and 7 days after operation in TA group was lower than that in control group, the differences were statistically significant(P=0.043, 0.046, 0.010). The difference in anterior chamber reaction 30 days after operation was not statistically significant (P=0.311). The difference in BCVA, intraocular pressure and corneal endothelial cell density 30 days after surgery between the two groups were not statistically significant (all P>0.05). Conclusion Anterior chamber injection of small does of TA in anterior uveitis concomitant cataract surgery can reduce the postoperative anterior chamber reaction and it is a safe and effective method. Key words: Uveitis, anterior; Cataract, concomitant; Triamcinolone acetonide(TA), anterior chamber injection
