Abstract

HDPE/soya powder/kenaf-core composites were prepared by incorporation of kenaf-core powder at different loadings into HDPE/soya powder matrix with an internal mixer at 180°C and 50 rpm rotor speed. The effects of kenaf-core filler loading and chemical treatment on properties of HDPE/soya powder/kenaf-core composites were investigated by FTIR, SEM, water absorption and mechanical tests. Chemical treatment of kenaf core caused a significant increase in stabilization torque, water resistance and the mechanical properties of HDPE/soya powder/kenaf-core composites. Results from FTIR and SEM observations indicate that better adhesion was observed for the HDPE/soya powder/kenaf-core composites with chemically modified kenaf-core filler.
