Abstract

Cameron Douthitt, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Alvin Junior College, Alvin, Texas, is director of the mathematics laboratory there. He is currently developing learning modules for use in the math lab. This paper is taken from a presentation at the MAA meeting in San Marcos, Texas, in April 1972. The withdrawal-failure rate (denoted W/F) in freshman mathematics courses at the University of Houston is approximately 30%, while the W/F rate among risk students is approximately 70%. Risk students are those from the top quarter of their high school graduating class who achieved a score of less than 450 on the mathematics section and a total score of less than 900 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Risk students come from predominantly black high schools in the Houston area. They receive high grades while in high school yet for various reasons they do not succeed in college. One factor in their lack of success in college is their failure to perform acceptable work in mathematics. A study was conducted at the University of Houston during the fall of 1970 to determine the effects of a mathematics laboratory on achievement, attitude, and the W/F rate. This report is a summary of the effects of the laboratory on achievement.
