Abstract

ABSTRACT About 90% of the academic books published in the world are published outside Africa, therefore African libraries rely on the western world for most of their library materials. This has been a major constraint to collection development in view of the foreign exchange restrictions made worse by the economic depression and the foreign exchange deregulation policy. Blackwells and Heffers in United Kingdom are their major book suppliers. A substantial part of the library materials budget of African libraries should be made available in foreign exchange to enable the libraries to procure the necessary books, periodicals, and other non-print materials from abroad.
