Abstract

Under various tensions the magnetostriction of iron single crystals was measured at room temperature by means of strain gauge technique. Two magnetostriction constants λ 100 and λ 111 were found to be independent of tension. Formerly one of the authors observed a tension-dependent magnetostriction constant by using a mechano-optical lever, which was found to be due to the overlooking of the fact that the long rod specimen is not uniformly magnetized over the whole length on account of its demagnetizing field. It was found that the magnetostriction of the rod specimen must be measured only in its uniformly magnetized portion. The mean values of magnetostriction constants were: \begin{aligned} \lambda_{100}{=}19.2{\times}10^{-6},\quad\lambda_{111}{=}-22.6{\times}10^{-6}. \end{aligned}
